My Khmer New Year in Sihanoukville

Wat Krom

Most years, Khmer New Year is an extravaganza in our household. Mercifully for me, for a variety of reasons, this year it has been a very low key affair. While normally we rent a car, pack up the whole family and head for a distant wat, this year Mama and Papa took the motorbike and just went to Wat Krom, one of 3 Buddhist wats in Sihanoukville and now the nicest. My Khmer New Year in Sihanoukville was even more low key than that.

I skipped the morning trip to the wat, instead opting for an after lunch visit, when it was quiet after the morning’s activity.

I’m not going to ramble on about the hour I spent at Wat Krom this afternoon. I’ll let these photographs do most of my talking for me. Suffice it to say that it weaved its magic for me. It’s been a tough couple of months, with lots of illnesses, a limited income and a lot of emotional pressure. Things will return to normal in a couple of weeks, but until I spent that quiet hour walking around the grounds of Wat Krom in Sihanoukville, those couple of weeks seemed like a long way off. Enjoy.
